Just after pilot-season when shopping for new TV shows starts (April-May) or when a great deal of actors say "things slow down", I find they are just heating up. As a non-union actor and even for the union productions I find the great majority of independent films of any length prefer to shoot in summer. With the bulk of your teams expenses going toward crew vs. talent crews rates seem to be cheaper in the summer months. Also studios are a bit more free, like the non-equity houses of NYC, willing to lease out cheap to any festival that can cover their AC bills with their residency. Summer is possibly the busiest time of the year for actors in my position. The early stages of being non-union, non "Name" talent, and flexible enough to travel to any regional theater toting town leaves you with more appointments and options for work. Couple that with an open east coast market in the south you better be ready to tape at the drop of a hat. As I begin to build my on tape set-up at home there are a great deal of spots in BK, Queens, and Manhattan that can get you yourself tape without coordinating several artists on a weekday. Right now it looks like Self Tape Success has the largest offering of options including a nice and quiet VO booth if you're out in the city and don't want to ask Bank of America for an empty office. Also, $40 for the half hour Actors Connection has over the phone booking, flexible hours, and great facilities- they can get you your tape within the hour after recording. All in all a busy, beautiful, budding week full of self-tapes, indie film auditions, and getting this site up and running! Thanks for stopping in, enjoy the new reel, and come back to see whats the latest! Gratefully, SBjr.
